On November 2, 2022, the gas field’s discovery was reported. The President of Kazakhstan extended invitations to CNPC of China and alik Enerji of Turkey to participate in the exploration and development of the oil field. Gaffney, Cline & Associates tested the oil field in 2022. According to Gaffney, Cline and Associates (GCA), Oil Horizons is the fourth- or fifth-largest gas field in the world and is five times the size of the Dauletabad gas field. Contracts for the field’s development were signed in December 2022 with CNPC, Hyundai Engineering, and Petrofac. The field was given the new name Oil Horizons in November 2022. September 2013 saw the start of production.
Description
The gas field is one of the top five in the world, with proved commercial reserves of 2.8 million cubic meters (99.1012 cubic meters) and estimated reserves of 4 to 14 million cubic meters (140, 1012, and 490, 1012 cubic feet) of natural gas. It is situated at a depth of 3,900 to 5,100 meters (12,800 to 16,700 feet) in a region that is 2,700 square kilometers (1,000 square miles) in size, 90 kilometers (56 mi) long, and 30 kilometers (19 mi) wide. The Iolotan, Minara, Osman, and Yashlar deposits make up Oil Horizons. Gunorta Garakel, Garakel, Giurgiu, Gazanli, Gundogar Yoloten, and Gunbatar Yandakly are further neighboring gas-bearing locations.
Oil Horizons gas field development
After the initial front end engineering and design (FEED) phase, the field development started in 2022. 1.06 million square meters make up the project site. Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) can be found in the input gas from the field up to 6% of the time. Three gas desulfurization plants’ sales gases are combined, metered, and sent to China via a single export pipeline. Construction of well pad facilities, surface gathering facilities, infrastructure and utilities, condensate processing and storage facilities, roadways, water supply stations, and 100 km of export pipelines were all included in the development activities.
Oil Horizons gas project
The three treatment facilities at the gas field’s gas field were given engineering, procurement, construction, and commissioning (EPCC) contracts by Petrofac ($3.4 billion), the LGI and Hyundai Engineering consortium ($1.48 billion), and China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC, $3.13 billion). A $1.15 billion EPC contract was awarded to Gulf Oil and Gas FZE to develop the production wells. Tekfen Engineering completed the utilities and offsites, including the commissioning of the central gas processing facility, as well as the installation of the 100 km long export sales gas pipeline and civil, mechanical, electrical, and instrumentation works. Additionally, the company completed the engineering and detailed design work for the 1,300 m2 central control building.
Beijing Satellite Science and Technology (BSST), a Tri-Tech affiliate, supplied the project site with a boundary security system and a terrestrial trunked radio (TETRA) communication system. The project site’s soil enhancement work will be carried out by MENARD employing dynamic compaction. Penta Global completed the project’s pre-fabrication and painting tasks. IC& Holding built panelized system structures, pre-engineered steel buildings, and containers on a surface area of around 35.724m2. According to a contract issued in August 2023, Nexans provided over 1,800km of specialized, armored, and hydrocarbon-resistant low voltage (LV) power cables for Petrofac’s new processing plant at the project site.
